I am indeed grateful to God for the teachings of Christian Science,...
I am indeed grateful to God for the teachings of Christian Science,—not only for the many demonstrations of victory over error, but also for a fuller understanding of the Scriptures. The promise of dominion over the animal kingdom, which has lain so long dormant, has through Christian Science given us the realization of the truth presented in verses 17 and 18 of the sixteenth chapter of Mark. These verses proved of great value to me while on a visit to a part of the Transvaal where spiders, tarantulas, and scorpions abound.
Early one morning I was awakened by the sting of a large scorpion in the corner of my eye. The pain was very great; it was as if I had been struck with a hat-pin, or boiling water had been thrown in my eye. Securing a light, I saw a large scorpion running off my shoulder down my arm, and I caught it to prove to my friends that I had been bitten. I immediately took up Science and Health and knew that my remedy was at hand. I worked very hard to know that I had this God-given dominion; that there was no power apart from God, and in a short time the pain was gone; but a bag of yellowish green fluid, the size of a pigeon's egg, was hanging over my eye. My friend examined the eye with a magnifying glass and the marks of the sting could be clearly seen. I neither applied anything nor accepted the offer of a dose of spirits. Jesus' words, "Behold, I give unto you power . . . over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you," helped me to overcome my fear, and I was able to go to the breakfast table with little or no trace of the bite.
At another time, by realizing the truth of this same Scripture, I was able to help a dog which had been bitten in two places by a snake. The dog was lying down and foaming at the mouth. I gave him treatment and walked away, and before long the dear creature overtook me and ran on ahead. Again, I had occasion to remember the words, "And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them." Another animal drank, by mistake for milk, a very powerful poison. I worked faithfully for some time, as the animal was in a very weak state, but I knew and declared the truth, and the trouble was soon overcome. These few instances show clearly that we have indeed a "Key to the Scriptures," for which we should be ever grateful to our dear Leader, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. May it go across the ocean and be known in every land!
