A feeling of gratitude prompts me to tell of the many...

A feeling of gratitude prompts me to tell of the many blessings and joyful experiences which have been mine through Christian Science. One day in June, 1911, while on my way to work, I was suddenly seized with a severe griping pain, accompanied by ague, and I broke down on the street. It took me quite a while to get up, whereupon I dragged myself home, work under these circumstances being out of the question. A physician, who was summoned immediately, prescribed medicine, which, however, proved utterly ineffective. These attacks were of almost daily occurrence, and the headaches which were added became so violent as to be almost unbearable. A second physician was then consulted, who stated that my trouble was due to nervous weakness, and he in turn prescribed for me, and I followed directions strictly, though without experiencing improvement. My attention was then called to Christian Science, and notwithstanding the stormy weather then prevailing, my wife and myself went to see the lady who had told us of it, in order to hear more about it. We left her with a sense of new hope, and the next day applied to a practitioner.

The effect of Christian Science began to manifest itself after the first treatment, and my condition improved noticeably, so that I was able to take up my work again; but owing to a lack of understanding of its teachings, I experienced a relapse after a few weeks, which assumed such a severe character that in my distress I called in the physician. He again prescribed medicine, which I took, believing that it would relieve me, although my knowledge of Christian Science should have made me realize that God is our only physician and Mind our only medicine. The consequent effects were dreadful, for not only did the pain and the weakness become most alarming, but the ear cavity and the throat were burned, so to speak, by the drug, and an old trouble reappeared of which I had not been conscious for a long time.

I must state here that one year previous to this time I had had medical treatment at the hospital, in which my throat had been injured, so that I experienced severe pain in those parts for quite a while afterward. This injury was very evident now, so I was sent to the hospital, where an X-ray examination was made, and where the examining professor said that the conditions were very serious. I requested the Christian Science practitioner who had assisted me previously, to take up treatment once more, which was done at once. Although the healing went on slowly this time, it gradually became clearer to me that disease cannot come from God, infinite good, and the more I relied upon the power of ever-present Love, the more error disappeared. Today I may say with a grateful heart that my healing is complete, and that I am able to the fullest extent to attend to my work.
