TRUTH'S CLEANSING POWER

In the prophecy of Zechariah we are told of a fountain which was to be opened, or revealed, "for sin and for uncleanness;" and in the book of Proverbs we find a statement which readily relates itself to the first,—"The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." We usually associate a fountain with the satisfying of thirst, rather than with cleansing, and the Scriptures present many such passages, but in that from Zechariah the abundance of the water is at once made apparent, and this recalls the oft-quoted words in Science and Health, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (p. 494). It also brings before us the lines in our dear Leader's Communion Hymn, respecting the word of Truth (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 178),—

Sinner, it calls you—come to this fountain;
Cleanse the foul senses within;
'Tis the Spirit that makes pure,
That exalts thee, and will cure
All thy sorrow and sickness and sin.
