In August, 1909, while with friends in Humboldt, Iowa, I arose one morning with a dull pain in my right arm and shoulder. I ate some breakfast with difficulty, but by eleven o'clock I was lying on the bed helpless and in the most intense agony, the hand and arm badly swollen to the shoulder. A faithful Christian Science practitioner was called from Des Moines over the long-distance wire, and immediately the pain began to lessen and in half an hour I was asleep. At three o'clock I awoke, went to the diningroom, and ate my delayed dinner with a good relish. I was free from pain, though the swelling and a sense of stiffness still remained. I read and studied the Bible and Science and Health during the remainder of the day, retiring at the usual time to a good night's rest.
This had occurred on Monday, and on Tuesday I used the hand, now fully restored, to write to the practitioner. Wednesday morning I did my washing, and with a heart full of gratitude testified to this healing at the Wednesday evening meeting. Materia medica would doubtless have called this an acute attack of rheumatism. When I was a girl, before I knew anything of Christian Science, I was helpless for three months from this same disease, was fed and handled like an infant, and was two years in making even a partial recovery. Complete recovery never came till Christian Science brought it, years later.
During early life I was much of the time an invalid, and like the woman mentioned in the gospels, I certainly "suffered many things of many physicians," but all to no avail. We are farmers, and with the help of Christian Science has come the ability to do the work required. Not always has relief come so quickly, but it has come just as surely as we knew that "God is our refuge and strength." This testimony conveys very imperfectly my sense of gratitude to God for Christian Science, and to its Discoverer, Mrs. Eddy.
