At the age of ten I began to be ill, and I suffered for years. In May, 1907, when my mother passed on, I broke down completely; my appetite failed, and I was unable to take any solid food. I consulted several physicians, also specialists, but they could not agree in their diagnosis. Our family physician had given me up entirely, and said that the slightest excitement would cause death. While in this distressed condition, there was added another affliction in the summer of 1909. At intervals of eight to fourteen days I was seized with spasms, which were only relieved by hypodermic injections, thus inducing a state of stupefaction.

About this time we heard of Christian Science through dear relatives, and the trouble having reached a stage where the opiate failed to relieve me and I could not bear the aftereffects any longer, I went to Hannover, accompanied by my brother. I had been unable to leave my bed for three months, but received absent treatment during the journey. Upon our arrival the practitioner explained Christian Science to us, and my courage was renewed at once. I remained in Hannover under treatment, and the spasms ceased for some time, but it took further efforts before they were entirely overcome. In the following year I experienced many proofs of God's omnipotence and love, for whenever the practitioner was notified of my need, the attack would cease, in most instances quite suddenly. I was unable to help myself in such cases, as I would lose consciousness. In the winter of 1910, however, after a severe crisis, there was a decided change for the better. During this period of chemicalization I had several attacks which affected the left side, so that it became totally paralyzed. I also lost my speech and eyesight, and lay unconscious for a week, but I did not resort to any kind of material remedies and had no physician attend me, as I knew that a radical change was taking place within and that I was under God's protecting care. After this my condition improved visibly and rapidly, so that in the following spring I was able to walk with a stick, and soon after to go to Braunschweig alone, in order to attend the Christian Science service. My healing took over two years in all, but I have been in very good health ever since. I am twenty-three years of age, and able to do the housework as never before. Everything has taken a turn for the better.

The deepest and most sincere gratitude fills me as I write this testimony, gratitude to God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to all the dear ones who have helped me to live this new life; and the hope is present with me that this testimony may be the means whereby many fellow beings, weighed down by sickness, as well as seekers after Truth, may be helped to find the way to the light which dispels all darkness. I am deeply grateful for the physical healing, but more especially for the spiritual regeneration, and my endeavor is to walk more and more in the footsteps of our Master.
