I wish to express my gratitude for the blessings that have...
I wish to express my gratitude for the blessings that have come to me through the study and application of Christian Science. In my ignorance, before I had read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I criticized Christian Science severely; but on visiting relatives some eleven years ago, I was much surprised to learn that they had become interested, and the wonderful healing which they told me had occurred in the case of their youngest child through its agency, excited my curiosity to see the book. I read the chapter on Prayer, and immediately my opinion of Christian Science was changed. Here was something for which I had been striving, and I might add starving, for a long time. When I returned home, I purchased a copy of the book, and my dear mother and myself read and studied it in connection with the Bible; and let me say here, that the dictionary proved an invaluable aid, for many words which seemed to us oddly used, were cleared up by such reference.
We did not become interested in Science in the hope of any physical healing, but through the understanding thus gleaned I was nevertheless healed of a chronic affection of the stomach with which I had been afflicted more than a year. Our family physician had treated me for months unsuccessfully, and I was then taking treatment of one of the best stomach specialists in Indianapolis, Ind., where we lived. The latter informed me that he could not cure me, but could only alleviate the pain during the frequently occurring attacks, and that by following his instructions rigidly I might, after seven years (as according to medical theories the system changes every seven years), outgrow the disease, providing I was strong enough to stand it that length of time.
During one of the severest of these attacks, after I had been reading Science and Health for a couple of months, I determined to try Christian Science. If it healed others, it could heal me. Though in excruciating pain, which no change in position lessened, I cast aside medicine and called for the book, which I read intently for some time. In less than thirty minutes I was a well girl, free from all pain, and I have never since had an attack of that complaint. My back was not left sore, nor was I weak for days following, as I had been after previous attacks.
