The vicar of Brixton's announcement of his intention to hold Christian Science services at his church during advent (as reported in our last issue) has created considerable interest and criticism. We do not propose to publish any communications dealing adversely with the vicar's convictions, but the following critical and learned dissertation, addressed to the editor by Frederick Dixon, a distinguished Christian Scientist, will be read with interest by all who are interested in the subject:—

To the Editor of the Brixton Free Press.

Sir:—The new departure taken by Mr. Waldron with respect to mental healing and chronicled in your issue of the 1st inst., is so interesting that I am sure you will permit me to allude to it. First, may I say that every Christian Scientist will welcome every endeavor to heal the sick by reliance on prayer rather than on drugs. At the same time, this clergyman, I am afraid, will find the patients relying more on the doctor than he has yet any idea of. It is not hostility to doctors; it is not contempt of what medical science may have done for those who have believed in it in the past, that has caused Christian Scientists to rely on Truth alone. A great metaphysical fact is at stake, and I think that after some months of experience the gentleman will begin to realize more perfectly in practice than he has ever been able to do in theory, what this means.
