IMMORTALITY

No greater hope dwells in the breast of mankind than that of immortality, and no clearer statement of the possibility and modus of immortality was ever made than is afforded by the words of Christ Jesus when he said, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." He did not look upon immortality as a far-off and uncertain state of the future, but commanded his disciples to preach the immanence of the kingdom of heaven, the availability of good works in the preparation of mankind for the recognition of this kingdom, and the certainty of this recognition as the result of such good works.

It is clear, then, that to know God aright, to know Him as "the only true God," and His Son Christ Jesus as one with the Father, is the gateway through which we may enter upon eternal life, or immortality. It was through his knowledge or understanding of God that Jesus was able to do the many wonderful works which he declared they that believed on him—understood the Principle through which these works of healing were wrought—should likewise be able to do,—bid the evil spirits depart from those who were grievously tormented, and the sick to be made whole; and that the ability to do these works should be the badge of their discipleship.

It is their acceptance and demonstration of this teaching of the Master that differentiates Christian Scientists. They are taught to have faith in all the promises of the Master, and to prove their faith by their works,—know and declare the omnipotence of Truth and Love to heal and to save, and be confident of the results; as was Jesus when at the grave of Lazarus he said, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always." He was holding out no vain hope to Martha when he declared, "Thy brother shall rise again;" he knew that Lazarus would come forth at the word of command, because of his confidence in the power of God to raise again those seemingly dead.
