Roanoke (Va.) News
If the reverend gentleman, our critic, had made even a fair investigation of Christian Science, he would see that it is the exact opposite of hypnotism, alias malicious animal magnetism, and that it has no more relationship or likeness to it than the wonders wrought by Moses had to the necromancy of the magicians. Indeed, the works of Moses and the prophets, of Jesus and his disciples, were based on the same truth that is proclaimed today by Christian Science, and they were performed according to the same Principle and its laws as are the wonderful works of healing now being wrought by Christian Science; while the magic and deceptions of the soothsayers and magicians, denounced by the Mosaic law and by Jesus, were but phases of the evil practise which today is called hypnotism or animal magnetism, the supposed control of one human mind over others.
Jesus' discourse on this subject, recorded in the twelfth chapter of Matthew, twenty-fourth to thirty-third verses inclusive, is very instructive. He likens the use of hypnotism to cast out devils to a house divided against itself; that is, the source of evil cannot produce good. "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit." Having shown the inconsistency of the use of hypnotism, he said, "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." This is the Christian Science method, the only effect of which is to bless mankind, never to injure; healing sickness and sin through the truth which Jesus said "shall make you free."
