North Star

I note in a recent issue of your paper the question as to how the followers of Mrs. Eddy explain the fact of her passing out, and beg to say that it requires no special explanation, any more than it is necessary to explain why, with all the churches, ministers, and denominations of the world, apparently sin still continues and men still require salvation. The explanation is that none of us have yet attained to the fulness of that realization of God and man's unity with Him that lifts us to that spiritual altitude in which we shall be able to redeem the promise that "the last enemy" shall be overcome.

Mrs. Eddy never claimed that she, herself, or that her followers in this or the next succeeding generation, would be able to make the ultimate demonstration, but she did claim, and has proven, that the first steps can be taken now; that, beginning here and now, we become possessed of better health, better morals, and of a better view and comprehension of the spiritual life and turn our steps in that direction; and that, as it goes on from these small beginnings, the human race will progress, until the goal is finally attained and we reach that sense which came in the view of St. John when he said, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away." Christian Scientists are not so much interested in asking why death is not overcome, as they are in healing the sick and saving the sinner, and from the lessons thus acquired obtain a sure sense that eventually the full attainment will be realized.
