My first impression of Christian Science came nearly...

My first impression of Christian Science came nearly twelve years ago, through some copies of the Christian Science Journal that were loaned me by a friend who, though not a Scientist, had some faith that my sister might be helped by it. My sister at that time was in a condition of mental and physical breakdown, the result of a serious accident and the passing away of a friend. This condition neither the doctors nor medicine had been able to relieve. From the reading of those Journals, I felt that there must be some power in Christian Science which could help in this case. We also came in contact with a lady who told us of her own healing through Christian Science, and who greatly encouraged and strengthened our faith in it.

While reading the testimonies of healing, I had a great desire to read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which is so often referred to, and did not feel satisfied until a copy was loaned me. With the first words of the Preface, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings," I instantly felt the conviction that here was a great truth which might help me, if I could only grasp it. I had not thought of Christian Science for myself until then, though I was in desperate need of healing. For about six years previous to that time I had been an invalid, from injuries received in childbirth, and other troubles, so that most of my time was spent upon my couch. Our two young children were frail and delicate and were nearly always in the care of the doctor; in fact, ours was a continuous history of sickness, doctors, nurses, and medicine. My husband tried to keep up his own courage, and mine too, but we were almost in despair of ever seeing a happy day in our home. We had been gradually losing the hope that there would ever be any way out of our troubles, for we had faithfully tried materia medica, hygiene, diet, rest-cure, without anything more than a temporary benefit.

At this time we were prepared to be led into Christian Science, and we soon found that it was indeed the way out of the darkness into light. My sister was healed in about two weeks by reading Science and Health, and is still rejoicing in the truth. Treatment was given me for a few weeks, and I began to have new hope. In three days I found the faith and courage to leave off glasses which I had worn several years and thought I would always have to wear, according to a specialist. Then I turned to the book, and with earnest study, day and night, and with a few treatments at intervals, the healing came, very slowly but surely. By my great necessity I was forced to search for the way out, through the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, for all of which I am deeply grateful. I had been studying Christian Science a few weeks, earnestly seeking for the knowledge of God, when I had an experience which impressed me with an assurance and confidence in Christian Science that has never left me. I have since understood that Christian Science is the voice of Truth, that its spiritual power is impersonal, and sufficient to guide and lead all the way to the perfect knowledge of God.
