Christian Science is, as its name implies, that scientific understanding of God and His relationship to man and the universe, called by St. Paul the "knowledge of God." That Christianity has not usually been regarded as a science capable of practical demonstration has arisen from the neglect of the commands of Christ Jesus. He gave his followers a simple test by which they might prove to their own satisfaction, and to the satisfaction of others, that they possessed a clear scientific understanding of his teachings: "These signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." When in the course of centuries those who called themselves Christians no longer found themselves abel to heal the sick by their faith, i.e., their perception of the true laws of being, they should have seen that they were no longer adhering strictly to the Science of Christianity. Instead of reviewing carefully there own position, they excused their lack of power by asserting that the times had changed that God's ways of dealing with men were no longer the same, that our Saviour had possessed supernatural powers, and that it would be presumption in ordinary mortals to think they could do the works which he and his disciples had done; and yet what could be simpler than his own words on this subject, namely, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

Thus it comes about that our Lord's sayings are regarded rather as poetical utterances or moral aphorisms, than, as what they are in fact, plain statements of scientific truth; thus it is that those with whom logical sense is more developed than spiritual intuition, have been led to reject the gospel narrative as a mere compilation of myth and legend. Christian Scientists are making a humble and sincere effort to carry out aoo the commands of Christ Jesus; they have been greatly encouraged by the success which has attended their efforts, and they look forward to far grander results in the future, when they have grown farther into "the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."
