A PROBLEM AND ITS SOLUTION

I was very tired of church work. For weeks thoughts such as these had been forcing themselves upon me: "For so many years you have done so and so; you have earned a rest; it is some one else's duty to take his turn, etc." So I made up my mind to refuse office in the church the coming year. Still I was not satisfied, nor did I feel comfortable, or certain that I was doing right. Hence I kept on thinking over the matter, and gradually this line of thought evolved itself: "Since you accepted and have tried to walk in Christian Science, have you been practically free of anxiety for the future?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because I have learned that God is the source of all supply, and that if I go on from day to day, doing the best I know how, in whatever line of duty I find presented to me, then all my needs are met, for my storehouse, divine Love, is inexhaustible." "Well, then, does not that carry with it, as a necessary corollary, man's daily service?"

This question came almost as a shock, and as I thought it over, others came crowding in: "Can you accumulate service?" "What about last year's work, or that of the year before, or yesterday's?" "Was it more than sufficient for the moment?" "Did it not just serve for the day, and scant at that?" "Today's supply you expect from God; today's work you must give to God."

So I saw that we stand or fall from day to day. Then the full meaning of the thought, "I have done enough, I have earned a rest," dawned on me. It means, plainly put, just this: "I, a mortal man, have succeeded in putting the infinite in debt to me; now I can sit down and wait until God catches up." So, very gratefully I found the solution of my problem, and resumed my allotted task, thankful and willing to be of some service to our cause.
