I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing,...
I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, but was led to investigate it by seeing the healing of my neighbor's daughter, who had been ill for three years. Physicians, medicine, and even an operation had failed to give her relief, but when she turned to Christian Science for help, she was healed in three weeks. I then began the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and found it really to be what its name indicates, for in a short time the "door" was unlocked and I began to catch glimpses of spiritual realities,—the real man, and the universe created by God,—and with this revelation, this spiritual discernment, this new light, I found I had no need of glasses to improve my sight, which is of God; so I laid them off, and from that time to the present, over five years, I have relied wholly on God for our help and healing.
But the real test of my faith came about two years ago, when my son had an attack of fever. Nothing could have entered our home which would have caused more fear, as my husband had passed away with the same dread disease. Fear was so great in myself and family, that I felt incompetent to do the work myself. A Christian Science practitioner was therefore called in, and with her faithful and intelligent work the battle was fought and won. In six days the fever broke, and in three weeks he was back in the office. I am so grateful that I was given grace for that day, for, as our dear Leader says, in Science and Health (p. 410), "every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger." The physical healing that is accomplished through the understanding of God, as revealed in Christian Science, is wonderful, but the spiritual exaltation, that peace which "passeth all understanding," is best of all to me.
I wish that I might be able to express fittingly my gratitude to God for giving us a Leader such as Mrs. Eddy is in this present age and day; I know, however, that I am grateful only as I live and demonstrate this truth as far as I apprehend it. What a true Leader she has been to all humanity, willing to endure all things rather than to have the garment of Truth divided before the world!
