[Written for the Sentinel.]

WATCH

Watch !
Not on the moated tower
Of your cherished castle walls,
To see that only friendly foot
Upon the drawbridge falls;

But watch
The swift and silent thronging thoughts,
Each instant pressing hard
Against the princely portals
Of the thought you seek to guard,

And see
That no insistent visitor,
In friendship's borrowed gown,
Bears in his bosom sharpened steel
Later to strike you down.
