Previous to my acceptance of Christian Science, I had ...
Previous to my acceptance of Christian Science, I had earnestly longed for a church home. I had attended nearly all the churches of different denominations in my home city, but did not feel drawn to any one of them. I attended Sunday School regularly during my girlhood, and was an earnest student of the Bible for many years following. I had been brought up in a liberal faith, though I never resided where I could attend my church; but I felt that if I could do so, I should surely find in it that for which I was seeking, and Sunday School home for our two small children. When, however, I was able to attend a service in my own church, I came away disappointed; but how true it is that "man's extremity is God's opportunity"! In January, 1899, I had an accident which caused spinal trouble. My husband could not reach me at once when I fell, and, recognizing that he was frightened, I called out, "I am all right." Little did I then realize how much those words would have meant had I understood the truth as it is taught in Christian Science. An illness followed, and later I found that my strength did not return. The spinal trouble also caused me great suffering, and I was unable to perform my household duties as formerly.
I had known of Christian Science since 1888, when my sister had been healed of spinal trouble. (Her testimony is given on page 678 of Science and Health in editions previous to that of 1907.) I knew that medicine could not cure me, for it had been tried faithfully for her and I also knew that Christian Science had cured her. I took up Science and Health, a book which had been in my home untouched for six or seven years, and with the thought that if God could heal my sister He surely could do the same for me, I began reading. The first paragraph I read showed me so clearly the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, that I stayed all night on the ranch alone with my two small children, without fear. I had intended to have a friend with me, but I now realized there was nothing to fear when I was under the protection of God who is ever present and all powerful. On awakening in the night, the presence of God seemed so near and real to me that fear had no place in my consciousness. Then I knew that what I had read in Science and Health was the truth, for I had had my proof. I studied the book every day for two months, and I never knew when the spinal trouble left me, for after my reading each morning I was so filled with strength that the day's work was easily performed. During these two months I had many proofs of the power of God to overcome difficulties, both for myself and the children. My one thought throughout was, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God;" and surely the blessings promised have come to me.
I was supposed to have been born with heart disease, and was always a sickly child, but by great care and constant attention from a kind and able physician, I finally managed to finish my high school course in our Eastern home. After coming to California my general health was much better, but I suffered intensely at times with the heart trouble, which was supposedly organic. During the time that I was trying to overcome the spinal difficulty, I gave no thought to the heart trouble, but that, too, vanished, and I have never had a touch of it since. Later I was examined by a physician, and he could discover no symptoms of heart trouble. Some months after my healing I began attending Christian Science services and placed the little ones in the Sunday School, and later I became a member both of The Mother Church and of a branch church.
