It is difficult to find words in which to express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me. A new sense of life has been given me. "Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it." For the joy, peace, happiness, purity, health, abundance of good which it has brought to me, I am deeply grateful,—grateful to God for giving us this truth through our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Twelve years ago I entered a hospital in San Francisco to be trained as a nurse. After graduating I spent a year in private nursing, and then went to New York for a course in a special line of nursing. After eight months I returned to my home in southern California, where I did private nursing until three and a half years ago, when I broke down utterly. I sought help in various ways and at the end of five months was able to be around, though unable to work. I then went to visit relatives in Leavenworth, Kan., thinking the change would benefit me. I stayed six months, but was still unable to take up my profession. Divine Love then led me back to California, to dear cousins who were Christian Scientists. They had previously told me of Christian Science. I thought it beautiful, but was not ready to give up all my material remedies and rely absolutely on the Great Physician to heal me. But after failing to regain my health and strength from medicine or change of climate, I was finally ready to try Christian Science, and a few days after my return to California I commenced treatment. My healing was slow, but in six months I could do much work and in a year could do all that came to me.
I had worn glasses for ten years, and am very thankful to be able to state that I have never needed them since Christian Science came to me two years ago last June. I am also very grateful for the healing of bowel trouble. Mrs. Eddy says that "good flows into every avenue of being" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 185). Since learning what God is and what He does for man I have been shown a better way of helping the sick than any of the former methods with material remedies. I am learning that the only law to be obeyed is the spiritual, as Paul says, "for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." I did not want to return to my work of nursing under materia medica and was somewhat anxious, as it was necessary for me to earn living and my professional knowledge was the only means I possessed. I spoke of this to my practitioner, who assured me that when I was ready to go to work the way would plain. Since, February, 1906, I have had all the work I could do, caring for the sick under Christian Science practitioners, so that the promise has been fulfilled, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
