About six years ago, when in despair over my physical...
About six years ago, when in despair over my physical condition, I turned to Christian Science for help. I had been a sufferer for years from stomach and bowel trouble, and from severe headaches with which I had been afflicted since childhood, also bronchial trouble in an advanced stage, which was supposed to be hereditary. I had been treated by various physicians, and my husband, who was a doctor, was espcially anxious for me to try all the remedies available; but I was never cured by any of these, only relieved temporarily. A few years prior to this time, when suffering from an acute attack, a friend advised that I try Christian Science. A practitioner was called in, and through her realization of the power of divine Love I was greatly benefited. I began to read Science and Health, but my eyes were not then open to see this wonderful truth, and becoming discouraged I again turned to materia medica. About this time "mental science" was brought to my attention, and I honestly thought I had something I could accept without having to yield my theological opinions; but after two years; study and some treatment I became mentally darkened and a physical wreck. Then I awakened to the fact that I had gained nothing and had lost much, for to sense I was a greater sufferer than ever. It was then that I turned to God and implored Him constantly for light to lead me out of this darkness, and Love did send the light to me in an unexpected way. I was awakened in the night by pain, and in a semiconscious state I seemed to see a Christian Science practitioner standing by my bed, to whom I was saying, "God sent you to me." I was so impressed by this experience, which recalled that of Cornelius, the Roman centurion, who sent for Peter, that I soon sought the aid of a practitioner. After a few months of loving and faithful treatment I was healed of the severest of these maladies, and the rest yielded gradually as I accepted and studied Science and Health. Since then other members of my family have been healed of so-called incurable diseases, among which are my husband's healing of paralytic trouble and a dreaded disease of the kidneys. A child was helped epileptic trouble.
But even greater to me than the healing of these diseases has been the sustaining power of Christian Science, which has enabled me to pass triumphantly through the greatest anxiety and grief under conditions which seemed insupportable, and eventually to see each of them, as our dear Leader tells us, "reduced to its native nothingness" (Science and Health, p. 91).
I do not suppose it is possible for any of us to express sufficiently our gratitude to God, who gave us His beloved Son, Christ Jesus, the Wayshower, and later our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, through whose spiritual illumination has been restored the teachings of the Master, which are ushering in the dawn of peace, love, and universal righteousness.
