It is over two years since I first became interested in...
It is over two years since I first became interested in Christian Science. I did not then call myself ill, but I was a slave to drugs and had been for a long time. Science and Health was brought into our home by my son, and I availed myself of the opportunity to read it. In a short time I stopped taking medicine and began to eat whatever the rest of the family had. I soon found that the food did me no harm and that I was better without the medicine. I next obtained a Quarterly, and began to study daily the Lessons from the Bible and Science and Health. These appealed to me strongly, as I had been a church-member since the age of fourteen, and for many years a Sunday School student and teacher. The familiar passages from the Bible had never seemed so comforting before, and many that had formerly been obscure in meaning were made clear through their study in connection with the Christian Science text-book.
Soon after this I went to California to visit a married daughter, who had also become interested in Christian Science, and while there I became ill with some kind of a fever. After three or four days, as I seemed to be getting worse, my daughter advised sending for a Christian Science practitioner. She came, a kind woman, full of love. She told me that the fever did not have to run a certain number of days, and said other comforting things, which dispelled my fear. As some members of my daughter's family did not believe in Christian Science and wished to know the nature of the sickness, a physician was called in to diagnose the case. The doctor came, and although I was not told the nature of the illness until after my recovery, he pronounced it a dreaded fever, the same disease from which my husband and a son had died, and from which another son had been dangerously ill for weeks. I refused to take medical treatment, relying solely on Christian Science. The result was that within three weeks the bowels, the apparent seat of the disease, were in a healthy condition and I was well, sitting at the table with the family and partaking of the same food as the others. This I considered wonderful, after learning what the medical opinion had been. Had I then been familiar with the teaching on pages 392 and 393 of our text-book, I do not think the fever would have developed.
Since this experience I have had many demonstrations of Truth's power, and I thank God for being brought to the knowledge of this new-old way, for which I am thankful to dear Mrs. Eddy. I trust that I may be faithful in practising her teachings. I am thankful for the Sentinel and our other Christian Science literature, which is so uplifting and helpful.
