[Written for the Sentinel.]

THAT WAR MAY CEASE

O God of nations, speed the day
When men to men shall brothers be,
When right shall over all have sway,
And in Truth's freedom all be free.

Oh, speed the day when o'er the earth
The nations shall learn war no more,
Nor weak, defenseless ones shall fear
The bursting shell and cannon's roar;

When nations, powerful and strong,
Shall unto lowly peoples be
True, friendly, and protecting hands,
A pledge of larger liberty;

When widows' tears and orphans' cries
Shall be forgotten from the earth,
When joyful praise and melodies
Shall mingle with the children's mirth.

Then the glad song of Bethlehem
Shall ring on earth to heights above,
When men, redeemed from sin and pain,
Shall own the reign of peace and love!
