After suffering fifteen years under medical treatment...

After suffering fifteen years under medical treatment, I was healed in Christian Science. During the last five years the greater part of the time was spent in hospitals. I had undergone several operations without relief, three of them being abdominal incisions and performed within twenty-two months. After the last operation the surgeon told me I ought to have another, but on account of my condition he dared not undertake it. He said I had a dreaded disease of the kidneys; that there was not enough of them left to do the necessary work, and conditions certainly seemed to verify his statement. He said that all I could do was to be very careful as to what I ate, etc. I had never known much happiness, not having had a father's or mother's loving care, and subject to so much physical suffering that my physician's verdict that it was only a matter of time with me, made me rather glad than otherwise. I had been an attendant at an orthodox church for years, and had prayed earnestly and honestly for help when sorrow and suffering came, but my prayers seemed to rise no higher than my head, and I came to the conclusion that if there was a God, He was unjust and unmerciful. I finally stopped trying to pray and became hard and embittered,—an unhappy, irritable, nervous wreck. It was here that Christian Science found me, "having no hope, and without God in the world."

I knew nothing of Christian Science except that I had heard it ridiculed, but I was advised to try it, and did so, not expecting any benefit. I had worn glasses several years, but I laid them aside after one treatment and have never needed them since. A friend loaned me a copy of Science and Health, and though I did not seem to understand it, I could not let it alone. After a few days the same friend handed me "Miscellaneous Writings," and I read that with the same eagerness until one day I came to the statement, "Man is the idea of infinite Mind" (p. 247). I read and reread that sentence until the whole room seemed illuminated and a sweet sense of peace and protection came to me. I had found my Father-Mother God. For several days I seemed to walk on air. I ran up and down stairs and through the house, singing and happy, whereas before that I had to walk very carefully and sometimes for days could not go upstairs at all. Although the physical healing was slow, I am thankful it was, for I was compelled to study and work out my own salvation. I was treated in Science nearly two years, during which time a curvature of the spine over the kidneys disappeared, thought I never knew when it went into place and I had not even told the practitioner about it, as I thought I should always have this trouble. From the first treatment I ate anything I desired and without bad results. This was almost four years ago, and, I am now well and happy. After seeing my healing, my husband, who was an osteopathic physician, began the study of Christian Science, and he is now doing its work and with "signs following."

I am very, very thankful for being helped so lovingly and patiently over the dark places and through my many stumblings, and need I add how grateful I am to her through whom the blessed light of Truth has come to this age.—Mrs. Minnie M. Foley, Los Angeles, Cal.
