AMONG THE CHURCHES

An audience of over one thousand persons attended the opening services of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Twelfth and Felix Streets, yesterday morning [July 21]. The building, which has been finished at a cost of over one hundred and thirty thousand dollars, was begun in 1904 and has a frontage of eighty-four feet and six inches on Felix Street. The auditorium has a seating capacity of eight hundred, the gallery one hundred, and the Sunday School room, which is in the basement, four hundred. The services of the evening consisted entirely of the lecture of Judge William G. Ewing of Chicago, who was introduced by Hugh C. Smith.—St. Joseph Gazette.

At the communion service of the Christian Science church on Sunday [July 14] eighteen new members were received. The attendance at the Sunday service was so large that every available seat was taken. A new departure was entered into which no doubt will prove a success and will probably be followed by churches of other denominations. The envelope pledge system, a system that is characteristic to every church of the city, was done away with and all contributions hereafter will be free-will offerings. This new plan has been introduced in other Christian Science churches and has proven a great success. That the new system will meet with favor and success in the local Christian Science church was demonstrated on Sunday, when the collection was a very large one. The increase in membership has made it necessary for the officials of the church to order more seats.
