Knowing as I do that I have so much to be thankful for...
Knowing as I do that I have so much to be thankful for, and that through Christian Science my life has been saved, I want to tell it to all I can reach. Last March I was terribly burned. I was taken to a hospital, the physician and nurses declaring that if I lived it would be two months before I would be out of the building. After this, for a time I was mentally unbalanced, and no one in the hospital thought I would regain my mind. One friend who came to see me said after leaving that my appearance was so dreadful she could never come again. She was informed by the matron that my living was a matter of only a few hours; but that should I by any chance survive, I would be a hopeless cripple and insane.
After remaining in this condition five weeks, a friend came to see me, and I was sane enough to know that she wanted me to try Christian Science. I had heard of Christian Science before I was burned, but put off looking into it until some more convenient time. This time I asked for treatment. During the five weeks previous to this friend's visit I could not lie down, but sat up in bed and leaned my head against the wall for rest. I was given morphia through the day to relieve my suffering, the nurse injecting some during this friend's visit. That night I received an absent treatment from the husband of my friend, who had not seen me, and the next morning I awakened with my mind as clear and bright as it ever was, and at nine o'clock IL lay down on my back and went to sleep. I slept so soundly that the nurse had to awaken me by shaking, to inform me that my friend had returned to see me. It was not necessary to give me any morphia after the first treatment, for when the physician dressed my back that day I did not know when he removed the dressings, and it was only necessary to dress it twice thereafter. My arm, which was drawn up and badly swollen, began to straighten out, and in less than two weeks I was out of the hospital and caring for myself.
To-day I feel better than I ever did in my life, no ache or pain, but happy and light-hearted all the time, trusting in our heavenly Father and knowing that He cares for me. I have received many other blessings from Christian Science, but I consider this experience the greatest blessing I ever had, for it taught me the way to Christian Science. I want to thank our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, with every breath, for giving us this understanding.
