I had believed from childhood that I had inherited bunions, and as I grew older they troubled me very much, especially at night after having been on my feet a great deal. These attacks kept getting more frequent, and in July, 1893, I was obliged to leave my work at the Exposition grounds in Chicago and go home. Knowing no other remedy, we poulticed the foot. I then went to a hospital, where it was treated surgically, as the doctor said the bone was affected. After several weeks of this treatment I went to a chiropodist, who upon examining the foot, said that it was the worst case he had ever treated, and told me that there was nothing to do but to wear a large, thick-soled shoe and a pad over the joint, which I did, but it gave only temporary relief. I finally called a doctor where I am now living, and he told me that the only remedy was to remove the large toe, which he would do if it troubled me again.
At this time a kind friend called to see my wife, and recommended Christian Science to her for organic diseases which had been pronounced incurable. I commenced to read Science and Health, and with no other treatment than the reading of this book I was cured. I am on my feet all day, walking most of the time upon a cement floor. This healing occurred over eight years ago, and never for one moment have I felt pain in my foot. Before commencing to read the Christian Science text-book I had my eyes examined, and was told that I should wear glasses all the time. I was unable to read by artificial light, but after studying Science and Health a short time I was relieved of this trouble and I am now able to do the finest drawing by gaslight without glasses,—in fact my eyesight is better than it ever was.
