As a member of The Mother Church and First Church...

Continental Times

As a member of The Mother Church and First Church of Christ, Scientist, of New York, and head of a family of sincere Christian Scientists, I most earnestly protest against the use of your pages against Christian Science. The case you refer to is not in any way connected with the teachings of Christian Science, and no Christian Scientist who has honestly learned the first lesson of the Christ-principle and healing, is capable of committing such a deed as that reported in the daily papers. Christian Science is fast awakening a sinful world from its sleep; its influence is felt all over the world, notably among unnumbered thousands of the most intelligent English-speaking peoples. It teaches what it practises and practises what it teaches: Love thy neighbor as thyself. Honor thy country, its laws and its honorable lawgivers. Christian Scientists believe in one God, and their only preacher is the Bible and their text-book, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Lawyers, judges, professors, teachers and philosophers, as well as ministers of the gospel and doctors of medicine, are among its disciples, and if we admit that the work of Christian Scientists can only be judged by its results,—its fruits,—then indeed is this revelation an illumination of the human consciousness.

Christian Science is not Gesundbeten, but the exact Science of Jesus, "the most scientific man that ever trod the globe" (Science and Health, p. 313). Christian Science redeems and elevates even the infidel, the worst sinner; its influence is widening and growing in all parts of the world, and Berlin is no exception, the Germanistic thought being most receptive to this great ideal movement. Christian Science makes men happy and holy; it unites families in one harmony and peace, it proves the nothingness of fear, it enlarges man's possibilities in business, it destroys the belief in limitation, it purifies where other means fail, it proves man's birthright and his real relation to his God, it ministers bread where formerly only a stone rewarded mankind's prayers; it teaches the unity of man with God; it requires the strictest honesty; it makes man a true patriot, a genuine father, brother, and son, and no man holds citizenship in higher respect than does the Christian Scientist.

Great men have made efforts to become Christian Scientists, but the study of the letter avails nothing if the spirit be lacking; verily, little children are often our wayshowers, while intellectualism may become a stumbling-block to the understanding of spiritual Truth which delivers men from bondage. How can the modern scribe be expected to understand this Science by simply reading newspapers, when of old they saw even the great Master's works and yet doubted and ridiculed him?
