In one of the letters to our dear Leader which are printed in the Sentinel, some one wrote, "From all parts of the world grateful hearts will praise God for the ever-increasing light which is coming to humanity through your unparalleled labor of love." In this little town there is at least one heart grateful to God for Christian Science. I am thankful to God, and to our beloved Leader for this blessed truth that makes us free error of all kinds; and am thankful for a growing knowledge of this Science. Since coming here to make our home, nearly three years ago, being without the privileges of a Christian Science church, or even Christian Science friends, I have learned to appreciate the Christian Science periodicals more than ever before, and to profit by them. During this time, by faithful study of the Lesson-Sermons and with some help from friends in Los Angeles, I have learned to demonstrate more of the truth, and have gained a larger understanding of Christian Science than during previous years, when we made only slow but steady progress. We learned of Christian Science in 1889, when my mother had class instruction and we enjoyed the privilege of having physical healing when needed in the family. Since then reliance upon God has been our only remedy for all sickness, and we have found that Truth is never failing.
Nearly four years ago I was instantaneously healed of a bad attack of illness. I had been very sick all day, suffering too much, it seemed, to make the demonstration for myself, when all at once I remembered our Leader's words, "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them" (Science and Health, p. 420). This I did, and was relieved of all pain and fever immediately. Then for an hour the experience was wonderful. I could feel health and strength coming over me in waves of comfort. By this time I was able to eat a good supper and go to sleep, and had no more trouble. Since that healing I have rejoiced over the destruction of headaches and other physical ills, and much happiness has come to us by harmony being manifested in our surroundings,—much of comfort and of good, including a pleasant location; also a broader intellectual growth and increased capacities for good. Our textbook says, "The human capacities are enlarged and perfected in proportion as humanity gains the true conception of man and God" (Science and Health, p. 258). Surely spiritual understanding is our very life.
I realize that great blessings have come to each and all of us in the Field through dear Mrs. Eddy's recent articles; especially am I thankful for "Harvest." It endowed me with immediate strength and understanding to protest against human hatred and evil in my own experience at that time. To know that man is God's image and likeness helps to destroy any sense of hatred towards a would-be enemy; and with this understanding comes such a sweet sense of peace, for hatred surely is a destroyer. I am thankful for the truth revealed by each demonstration; by each error destroyed. It is the truth we want, more and more of this blessed truth, for the more we learn of it the more we are able to learn.
