Letters to our Leader

Jenningston, W. Va., May 25, 1906.

Dear Mrs. Eddy:—Four years ago a veritable multitude of physicians pronounced me a sick man doomed to permanent invalidism until death. Chronic indigestion had reduced my weight from one hundred and forty odd pounds to about eighty pounds. Extreme nervousness, violent headaches, etc., finally brought on convulsions. I shall only sketch in broad outlines my condition. June 20, 1900, I resigned my pastorate and spent the ensuing summer and fall at a health resort in Virginia. May 9 until Oct. 30, 1902—those months were also passed at a summer resort on the summit of the Alleghenies. Nov. 1, 1902, found me in a hospital in Philadelphia, where I remained one month. Shortly afterward, nine weeks more were passed in a hospital in Washington, D. C. Everything material was resorted to unavailingly. Sick nigh unto death—both bodily and mentally—Great God! the thought of it all sickens me even yet! Christian Science was brought to my notice by your student, Miss Antoinette P. Belden, of Collinsville, Conn., but my unreasonable prejudice against Science prevented my consenting even to read its literature for some time. I had on several occasions most bitterly denounced Christian Science from my pulpit, calling it a Satanic invention, and honesty compels the confession, too, that I referred to you in anything but complimentary verbiage.

July 18, 1904, your immortal book, Science and Health, reached me, and I began perusing it; but so deeply was I immersed in materiality that not until Jan. 10, 1906, did I even obtain glimpses of God's man, pure, perfect, eternal, and my improvement in physical health has been in exact proportion to my spiritual perception of God's infinitude. Perfect health is not yet made manifest in my case, but no material plummet can possibly sound the depths of error from which your discovery has rescued me, and I want to say, God bless you, dear one, for your great labors of love, the full-orbed significance of which this material epoch of time dreams not of.
