It was with a great deal of caution that I began the investigation of Christian Science. It was very difficult for me to believe that Christian Science was a higher revelation of God than anything we had known in the orthodox churches, in which my father and three uncles were ministers. For seventeen years, however, I was an invalid, with a complication of diseases,—weak heart, chronic liver trouble, dyspepsia, nervous prostration, sleeplessness, etc. My last illness confined me to bed for two months and to the house for three. I had treatment from physicians in three different cities; had an operation performed, and my physician said he would not be responsible for the outcome unless there was another operation at once. Instead of having the second operation I turned to Christian Science. My family thought I would die, and feared that my soul would be lost for accepting this doctrine. My healing was slow; not until months afterwards, when, in doing my own work and faithfully studying Science and Health, I could say fearlessly and confidently, I know this is the truth, did all the chronic ailments disappear. From being an invalid, weighing less than ninety pounds, I have been, as it were, literally renewed physically. But the physical healing, which calls for inexpressible gratitude, is not the greatest demonstration, which is the realization, in some degree, of my unity with God, the source of all good.

This truth is also manifest in the lessening of self-will, pride, evil thoughts, unkind criticism, and in the manifestation of more love, peace, and joy; I do rejoice that Christian Science can be proved in the destruction of both sin and disease. It was the spiritual uplifting and peace that came to me almost as soon as I began the study of Science and Health, that enabled me to continue in Science when the healing seemed a long way off, and amid bitter family opposition to wait for divine Love to do its work in destroying opposition and uniting us as a family in Science. The fear that something would be lost in turning to Science, has been replaced by the song of praise for the great good that is waiting for all who will come into a correct knowledge of God and man as His child. This God-given truth as interpreted to the world to-day by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health, is indeed "Immanuel, or God with us."—Virginia T. Fenton, Baltimore, Md.
