In December, 1904, about 2 P. M., while stepping from a ladder to a roof, I fell backward a distance of seventeen feet, breaking my left collar-bone close to the shoulder, also experiencing the usual results when a heavy man falls that distance. As soon as I had recovered consciousness, I went to the office of a surgeon and had the bone set. When offered tablets to induce sleep, I told the doctor that I believed in Christian Science and needed nothing but to have the fracture reduced. I walked to my home and at four o'clock sent for a Christian Science practitioner. She came at once, left me about six o'clock, returned about nine, left again at ten, and in that short time the sense of suffering had been so completely overcome that I retired and slept the greater part of the night. During the rest of my trial I suffered no pain from the fracture. I was told by the surgeon that six weeks would find my arm in splints, but I returned to my work in two weeks; in three weeks the free use of my hand was given me, and in thirty-one days the surgeon removed the last trace of his handiwork and pronounced my arm entirely sound. I was told it would be a year, at least, before I could have complete use of it, but in two months after the splints were removed that prediction was set aside. Considering the distance I fell, my weight, age, and temperament, I am more than gratified with the healing. In the four weeks that I was in the hands of the Christian Science practitioner I new ideals, also an incentive to attain them, and sunshine has taken the place of the shadow.
