Science and Health says on p. 5I6, "The sunlight...
Science and Health says on p. 5I6, "The sunlight glints from the church-dome, glances into the prisoncell, glides into the sick-chamber, glids the hospital cot, brightens the flower, beautifies the landscape, blesses the earth." When I read this passage it always reminds me of the first experience that the light of Truth brought to me,—behind prison walls and under a life sentence, a condition in which there was not much to look forward to. After serving some time here, I attended a Christian Science service which was being held in the chapel every Sunday morning, and the truth seemed to appeal to me. I was at that time somewhat of a wreck, physically and morally. I had kindney trouble, etc., and was unable to sleep, or to eat much without distress. Tobacco was my only god, and I was using all my allowance. I was, however, anxious to know more of what I had heard, so I purchased a copy of Science and Health, and before I had read it half through the truth was revealed to me in such a degree that I was healed. As I read on, I came to a page that had been marked by the Scientist who brought me the book, in regard to tobacco (p. 406), and when I had read it I could see that I had been worshiping a false god, and the habit was taken away with other beliefs in the supposed pleasure to be found in material things. I can now sleep well, eat anything I like without any distress, and best of all, I have received a spiritual uplifting more than I am able to express, and in this sense I am free. I feel that I am better off than some on the outside of these prison walls who know not this wonderful truth. I own two copies of Science and Health, one of which I keep to loan to my fellow-prisoners who are looking for a better life. I have made several demonstrations, and have a great desire to know more of Christ, Truth.
I wish to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for Christian Science, for the light that shone into my prison-cell and has remained in my consciousness.
