LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.—Jesus.

One of the first texts which a Christian Scientist engraves on the tablet of his heart is the passage from Matthew quoted above. After the first wonderful glimpse of what it must mean to have one infinite God, and to love Him with all the heart, the student addresses himself to the task of gaining a clearer sense of his relations to God, to his fellow-man, and to duty. This is slow and delicate work, for his old opinions and false beliefs must be recognized for what they are and be cast out. that they may no longer cumber the ground and choke the good seed.
