From my early childhood I was held under the belief of hereditary lung trouble and other ailments. I would be confined to the house for days, and as I grew older the attacks became more severe and protracted. Medicines failed to effect a cure, and even the most powerful remedies eventually ceased to have the usual effect. Later I began to decline in health, and a catarrhal condition of the stomach and bowels set in, also extreme nervousness. I was then about thirty-three. After many medical experiments, I went in I886 to visit my mother, and while there I was persuaded to try our old family physician. I was greatly emaciated, and after an examination he said I had an abnormal growth. He recommended and operation, to which I objected. He then remarked that my father had died from the same condition. I gave him a trial for some five or six months, but received little benefit. Another physician also said I would never be a well woman without an operation, and at the same time a noted specialist expressed the same opinion. I had lost faith in material means and was waiting for something, I did not know what. For years I had been dissatisfied with my knowledge of God, and was seeking for a solution of the life problem.
I felt that if God was all-knowing He must know my need better than I could tell Him, and if there was an exact truth He would reveal it to me in His own time and way. In I888 Christian Science was presented to me with the explanation that God is Life, Truth, and Love, the source of health and strength,—an ever-present help; that God is a saving and healing power, instead of a vague, far-away corporeal deity. My healing was slow, also my growth into the understanding of Truth, but with the help of a faithful practitioner many hard problems have been solved and many seeming difficulties overcome by the truth as revealed to me from the Bible and Science and Health, which are my daily companions.
