The Wisdom of Modest Statement

There is an old Latin proverb which translated reads, "He is wise who talks but little," and on encountering it recently I was led to reflect how well it expresses our proper attitude toward the public in regard to Christian Science, which primarily is to be known by its works.

Young Scientists are frequently impelled by the over-whelming joy which comes to them with their healing, to shout from the house-tops that "Christian Science did it," and often, on being questioned by friends, they are led to speak volubly of a subject concerning which they as yet know very little. Later on they regret their presumption, and wish that they had simply referred inquirers to our text-book with the suggestion that they read and prove it for themselves.

Mrs. Eddy has told us in "Miscellaneous Writings" that those who teach Christian Science must have our text-book by them in class and teach directly from it; how much more careful should we be, as beginners, in giving expression to views which of course are meant to be along the lines of geniune Science, but which, in view of our modest experience and knowledge of the subject, may seriously vary therefrom.
