Our Leader's Dedicatory Address
The dedication of the Church in Concord, our Leader's splendid gift to the Christian Scientists of her home city, is an accomplished fact, and this building will stand as an enduring testimonial to the re-establishment of spiritual healing as a practical, demonstrable, and necessary feature of our Master's complete and saving gospel; but more substantial, more enduring even than this granite pile is the Dedicatory Address which Mrs. Eddy prepared for the occasion. It is one of the greatest of our Leader's writings, and it cannot help but produce a marked effect upon the religious thought of the day, even as her book, Science and Health, has leavened the world's theology and changed its views about medicine. Its tendency is to turn the thought of those who heard it away from the sordid selfishness of materiality to the infinite possibilities of the Christ-life. Its profound Christianity, its appeal for justice, righteousness, and God-like living, commend it to all.
Christian Scientists see all this in Mrs. Eddy's words, and because they have tested the efficacy of her teachings, and because they know of her consecrated life, they are followers in that Cause of which she is the Leader. They appreciate the fact that this address has cost her labor, at a very busy time, that this labor has been freely given that they might receive the blessing in store for all those who have caught even a glimpse of Christ's kingdom. They have learned that she does not spare herself, but lovingly and unselfishly takes up any additional burden, no matter what the sacrifice.
Simply to say that we appreciate this address is not sufficient return to our beloved Leader for what she has given us. The only adequate return we can make for this great gift is to be Christian Scientists in fact as well as in name. Her standard is expressed in the following words which we quote from the address,—
