I give the following testimony with a heart full of gratitude to God, to our beloved Leader, and to the one who, thirteen years ago, came to me in an hour of great suffering and despair, and said these words to me, "I want to tell you that Christian Science can heal you. Four years ago it healed me of consumption in its last stages."
From childhood I had been regarded as a very delicate child. Four eminent physicians had pronounced my case incurable. The lady who first told me of Christian Science loaned me Science and Health, and after I had read a few pages, an indescribable peace came to me, and I felt very happy in the thought that there was one on earth who could tell me all I had longed to know about God, ever since I was a tiny child. My friend asked for the book before I had read it half through; but while reading Science and Health I was much improved physically, and to the amazement of myself and family, ate without suffering, articles of food which one physician had said would cause spasms. About nine months after I heard of Christian Science, I said to our family physician, "If you cannot cure me, I am going to have Christian Science treatment." He looked very much shocked, and said, "Well, if you do, in six months' time you will be in your grave; for the Christian Scientist will tell you to eat anything you want, and you cannot properly digest even liquid food."
A few weeks after this conversation, I asked for Christian Science treatment from the lady who first told me I could be healed. She gave me one absent treatment, and when she called to see me in the evening, I met her with these words, "I feel well and strong; and it is the first time that I can remember being free from pain." In a short time I bought a copy of Science and Health, and made a close study of the chapter on "Christian Science Practice." My heart was filled with a great longing to understand the teaching sufficiently to help others. I applied the truth as taught in that chapter, without a doubt of its healing power, and saw in the cases of others, consumption, pneumonia, erysipelas, and many other diseases, disappear like dew before the sun. I made a daily study of the Bible and Science and Health, and after working up to my highest understanding, I then applied to one of our Leader's students for class instruction. This equipped me to work with more understanding. By clinging to Truth in moments of temptation, I overcome a little more each day of that which is unlike divine Love.
