A Lecture Appreciated
It is impossible to estimate the amount of good that is being accomplished by the Board of Lectureship in correcting the misapprehensions about Christian Science, and at the same time bringing to public notice the grandeur and sublimity of Christianity and its efficacy in dealing with sin and disease. Through Christian Science the teachings of the Bible are proved to be practicable, and this is being presented to the public by the noble men and women who compose this Board.
This fact has been brought to our notice by a lecture recently delivered in our church, where the speaker held his hearers for an hour and a half and they were so interested that they remained seated for some moments after he had concluded; it seemed as if no one wished to rise and disturb the peaceful feeling which brooded over the audience. As the people passed out it was interesting to hear the remarks which were made about the lecture, and to note their earnestness in speaking about what they had heard. One man said, "That statement about fear affecting the body and evil thoughts doing us harm, is the most common-sense thing that I have heard for a long time; it has taught me a lot, and I can see that the remedy for these evils is right thinking and living, and this sheds a new light upon St. Paul's words, 'Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.' " Another was heard to remark, "After what I have heard to-night. I am so interested that I will procure a copy of Mrs. Eddy's book and begin to study the subject." An elderly gentleman said, "I took a seat near the door, because I had an appointment and did not wish to disturb the meeting by leaving before the lecture was finished; but I became so interested in what I heard that I remained, and I am glad that I did so." These are samples of many of the expressions which we overheard, coupled with thankfulness for the privilege of hearing the truth about Christian Science and its Discoverer. As we watched the passing faces and saw so much happiness, and saw also that a new hope had sprung up in many a heart, our thought turned in loving gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, our revered Leader, who in her wisdom and great love for mankind, made such meetings possible by giving us this Board of Lectureship. She foresaw the good which is being accomplished by it in preaching the gospel of peace, and educating the people. It gives them a new understanding of the Bible so that they can apply its teachings to their daily needs, both in health and sickness, thereby developing a greater faith in God and proving that the religion of Jesus is demonstrable.
