In the spring of 1893 I first heard of Christian Science, and the efficacy of its healing power. I was at first loath to give up my belief in the potency of medicine, although I had lost faith in materia medica as a science. However, after much persuasion I reluctantly consented to give Christian Science a trial, and was surprised to note how rapidly my body gained strength when I put my faith entirely in God and let go of all material means of healing. After one month's treatment I was raised from death's door to health, hope, and joy. My friends marveled at the great change and asked many questions about this mysterious healing power, the explanation of which is beyond my ability.
I have heard people say, "I have read the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health, and received no benefit." I can understand that one might obtain the letter of Christian Science by perusing the Bible and Science and Health, for the letter without the Spirit killeth. The spiritual consciousness so vividly described by John in Revelation, 21:1, 9 can, however, be reached on this plane, and unless we plant ourselves somewhere near to that altitude of perception, "the sin, which one has made his bosom companion, comes back to him at last with accelerated force." (Science and Health, p. 569).
My first summer in Christian Science was passed on a farm, and away from the turmoil of the world. Its unfoldment was a sweet revelation. I progressed and learned how to destroy the sense of pain, though the full control of the body came later, after I passed through what the senseman would call a crisis, which lasted two weeks and was spent in close confinement with the Bible and Science and Health. The following passage from our text-book, p. 283, "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action," was my message of deliverance, for on its realization I arose and in a short time returned to my business. As a commercial traveler I visited many cities, and the subtlety of error led me into the byways of various schools of false teaching, until finally the day of reckoning came and I was again a prisoner to mortal sense. I resorted to homæopathy, which gave me temporary relief, but a worse condition was yet to come; however, my later experience of sleepless nights and physical tortures taught me a great lesson. When my nervousness had reached a state where I could not bear the sight of any one, I again opened Science and Health, which had for ten years been a closed book to me. There was, of course, a great upheaval as the truth began to take fresh growth, but calmly and persistently I worked day and night, with faith that the Christ would again be found in me, and the light came before I expected.
