Georgetown (Col.) Courier
Jesus nowhere laid down any laws of hygiene, drugs, or sanitation. He had much to say about keeping the thought clean and not merely looking at, and caring for the outside of the platter. We are commanded to overcome the flesh, which to a Christian Scientist means poverty, pride, woe, sin, disease, and death. We can do this only by following the example of the Master and destroying in our consciousness all that is evil or opposed to the reign of the one infinite Mind. We do not attain this by diligently following material directions of drugs or hygiene, but by striving earnestly for the things of the Spirit. "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
On the other hand, Mrs. Eddy as well as loyal Christian Scientists everywhere, bear in mind the admonition of Jesus when he said, "Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's," therefore they obey all sanatary regulations as promulgated by the authorities, not only in deference to the law as law-abiding citizens, but in respect to the rights of others who do not recognize, as Christian Scientists do, the power of God to protect them from disease as well as sin.
