About twelve years ago when the grip was prevalent,...
About twelve years ago when the grip was prevalent, I contracted the disease early in the fall of 1891, and it remained with me from that time until March, 1892. The doctors advised me to go South, after having tried all kinds of medicine without any help. The disease had then settled in one of my lungs, the doctors said, and I was coughing night and day.
I started for the southern part of Georgia and stayed there nearly two months. I came back somewhat better, but not cured. The trouble kept coming back every winter and it resulted in asthma, bronchitis, and catarrh. I also suffered from dyspepsia. Nearly every doctor I consulted prescribed spiritus frumenti in connection with other drugs. The whiskey became very agreeable to me and I discarded everything else and used it exclusively.
In the mean time I was getting worse both physically and financially, in fact getting nearer to destruction all the time. I began to see the condition I was in and commenced to realize that I could not live this way much longer. Finally, about a year ago, when visiting in Chicago, one day I met an old companion who has been a Christian Scientist for a few years. I told him my condition and asked him as a favor if he would loan me his Science and Health, as I had heard it was a remedy for the blues, etc. I was very despondent and cast down. My friend said he would loan me the book if I would come out to his church on the north side the next day (Sunday) and get it. I did so, and attended the Sunday evening service. My friend met me there and gave me the book.
