Arthur Bumstead, Ph.D., says in the Universalist Leader:—

"A period of strenuous commercialism and materialism must be followed sooner or later by a period of reaction. Such a reactionary movement is already in evidence both within and without the Church. ... A religious system will ultimately gain ground or else lose its hold upon the hearts of the masses according as it supplies to them the spiritual food which they crave. It cannot be denied that the Church has oftentimes in the past been found wanting in this matter—that it has failed in instances where other systems have succeeded. ...

"This reaction from materialism goes hand in hand with the Church's return to the teachings of Jesus in their simplicity, and the movement is bound to find expression not only in the higher type of spiritual thought and doctrine, but also in a deepening and broadening of the altruistic impulse, destined ultimately to revolutionize the condition and life of great masses of the world's population. ...
