Oscar Fish of Valdez, Alaska, is the best-paid mail carrier in the world. He has just been awarded the contract of carrying the United States mails from Valzez to Eagle for another four years. He receives $35,000 a year. The distance between the two places is about 413 miles and he makes two trips a month. The mail is limited to three hundred pounds, and consists generally of letters only.

There is a disposition in the Senate to delay consideration of the canal question. It is possible that President Roosevelt will send a special message to Congress again inviting attention to the desirability of constructing an isthmian canal. The message will announce the negotiations which have been made with Colombia, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica by Secretary Hay.

Attorney General Philander C. Knox, has announced that injunction proceedings against the beef trust would be begun immediately in the United States courts at Chicago. President Roosevelt told the Attorney General he was gratified that the department had been so prompt, and had been so fortunate in collecting evidence.
