A Helpful Thought
A thought came to me recently which has helped me greatly to understand that every honest Christian Science treatment has its effect in destroying some part of our false sense of things which is keeping us from realizing the true.
It occurred to me while looking out of a window and seeing an ugly dead tree obstructing a very fine view beyond. To get the full benefit of thus beautiful view I must cut down this tree. I get a hatchet and begin. Now if the tree is a slender one, perhaps one, two, or three strokes will fell it. On the other hand, if the tree is very thick, it may take thirty, sixty, or one hundred strokes before it is brought down. In the latter case it will be seen that if the first, second, and all the intermediate strokes had not been given, up to the one hundredth, the tree would still have remained standing; but each stroke was necessary to arrive at the one which brought the whole tree down with a crash. I hope this little illustration will help others as it has helped me to see that the tree represents that amount of the false sense of things, or carnal mind, which stands, as it were, between us and our realization of Truth.
In some cases it is slight, and may be destroyed in one, two, or three treatments. Again in another case it may be very dense and thick, which will require a great many treatments, but every one has its effect and is necessary, as is the case of the thick tree.
