Christian Science Satisfies

Newburyport (Mass.) Herald

To the Editor of the Herald.

Christian Science is without doubt one of the most popular subjects of the day. This is probably due to the revolutionary ideas of philosophy taught in this Science and its healing effects upon mankind. So extensive have been the results of this faith upon its adherents that it has attracted universal attention. As is the case with most things that are new, some are likely to look upon it with more or less incredulity. Its radical departure from materialism would naturally meet with disapproval on the part of those who are deeply rooted in materialistic philosophies, until they have had opportunity to test the new ideas.

Its complete abandonment of medicine in the treatment of the sick is looked upon by those who have only a superficial knowledge of this science as neglect rather than a help. But all these difficulties are removed by experience. Every well established theory, contrivance, or institution has been obliged to run the gauntlet of scepticism and perhaps persecution, and even those who advocate new things have been more or less maligned, being hated because they were responsible for the new things and because the new cast a reflection upon the old.
