About six years ago I was crushed to the earth, as it were, by an accident; my husband and his employer being the victims. There was a gloom cast over the whole community where we lived on account of the terrible casualty. There were many friends and ministers of different denominations that came to offer sympathy and words of comfort, telling me that I must be submissive to God's will; but I must confess I was somewhat rebillious, for I could not understand why God had sent this affliction upon me, and could find no comfort, everything seemed dark and mysterious. I thought I had tried to live a Christian, had read a portion of my Bible every day and prayed that God would take care of my loved ones; then I thought it was no use to pray, God did not hear prayer, and no need to read the Bible, there was no comfort in it. I did not open my Bible for several weeks, for I had almost lost confidence in God.
After a while one day I was so wretched that I felt I could not bear my burden alone, and could not live without God's help; I picked up my Bible and opened it, and my eyes fell on these words, "Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear," and these words comforted me in a measure, but yet I could not see why I was thus afflicted. This was in 1896.
In 1898 a young friend came to our town and loaned me Science and Health. Up to this time I had never heard of Christian Science, and I eagerly devoured it, I was so hungry for Truth. It was near Christmas when I received the book, and on Christmas day I read the entire day. I did not stop to cook any dinner, my daughters being away from home, and I had such a feast as I never had before, and was greatly lifted up, for I was thankful to know that God had not sent these afflictions upon me. I could see it was indeed a Key to the Scriptures. I soon had a copy of my own, also "Miscellaneous Writings," and many others of Mrs. Eddy's writings.
