Christian Science in Germany
Much has recently been said in the newspapers concerning opposition to the spread of Christian Science in Germany. The dispatches are to the effect that the Emperor of Germany has intervened to prevent its further inroads into Court circles. It has also, it would seem, been discussed in the Reichstag. The nature of the discussion is not reported at length, nor do we know how correctly it has been reported at all. Neither can we determine, from the meagre dispatches, what the Emperor has done in the premises, if, indeed, he has done anything.
If, as is reported, a member of the Reichstag stated that Christian Science should be suppressed in Germany as it had been in the United States, we can only say that, as Christian Science has not been suppressed in the United States, but is spreading here with a rapidity that is astonishing its own adherents as well as the outside world, the argument in the Reichstag, if made, was not a happy nor a strong one; not more so, in fact, than was the coupling together of Christian Science and Spiritualism by another member. There is no more correctness of fact in the assertion that Christian Science and Spiritualism have the same psychological source than in the declaration that the former has been suppressed in the United States. Both statements show how little the subject under discussion was understood.
We shall patiently await the outcome in Germany, well knowing that when the Emperor and his subjects shall come to understand that Christian Science is none other than the true religion of the Gospels, is based wholly on the Word of God, and is but carrying out, in an especial way, the teaching and life-work of the Founder of Christianity, opposition to its establishment in Germany, as elsewhere, will cease.
