A Marked Illustration

Gazing out of the window of the Century Building just above the arched entrance of massive rock masonry, fixed and unchangeable in its entirety, I saw its reflection in the window of the building opposite. The solid arch was rent in twain, all out of proportion; it swayed in mid air; it rose and fell in unsteady rotation; at times it appeared likely to be dashed to the ground a battered mass of ruins.

Closer inspection showed that the window was in the form of a transom on a pivot, and the variable winds swaying the window back and forth, produced the illusive spectacle.

The thought which vividly presented itself to my mind, was its comparative suggestion of our relation to our life Principle. Here was the solid rock entrance, unchanged by the unsteady sway of the window; yet its reflection was demoralized. Steady the window by fixing it in its firm frame, and the reflection would be solid, whole, true to its original object.
