I had for years been groping in seeming darkness and despair, mortal mind constantly telling me that I was broken down in health, overwhelmed with trials, troubles, and difficulties, till the burdens laid upon me seemed greater than I could bear. In vain I cried to God to help and sustain me. Because I had asked amiss I had grown to believe that there was no rest or peace this side of the grave. Although a member of the Baptist Church since childhood and always trying to believe that mine was the church built upon the Rock, Christ, yet all the time I felt that I had surely never attained the apprehension of Truth which was at last revealed to me, through Christian Science.
About one and a half years ago, I was taken very seriously ill with pneumonia. I grew worse very rapidly, till my sickness took the form of a congestive chill, and it seemed very evident that death was fast approaching. Our family Physician lived thirty miles away and I would not allow any one to go for him, thinking perhaps I would get better, but instead my case grew so alarming that a doctor could never have gotten there in time to do any good, had he lived only a few miles away. So I asked my husband to send for a Christian Scientist who lived near, and who had impressed me very favorably in a talk which we had had some time before. My husband, not then believing, consented. When the Scientist came in, feeling that I was going fast, I said to her, "Oh, help me if you can !" "Yes, dear, I will soon help you," said she. She then requested those in the room to leave her alone with me, and turned to me with a smile. It seemed to me that the light of God shone in her face, and almost immediately a calmness began to steal over me. Truth came with such power that error had to give way, and I was soon fast asleep. When I awoke I seemed to have awakened to new life. I was filled with a calm, sweet joy and said to myself, surely this is that for which I have been so long seeking. That dear Scientist visited me each day for a week and told me of Truth. She showed me the Fountain of living water. I drank and it was sweet to my thirsty sense. Oh, how delightfully new and sweet!
My health was perfectly restored and I have no more use for material remedies. God is sufficient at all times and for everything. I now realize that prayer is not in vain, that Love wipes our tears all away. My heart goes out with love for God, the Principle of my being; to Mrs. Eddy, our dear Leader, and to that faithful woman who brought into my life Christian Science.
