Physical and Moral Benefits Realized
During one and a half years just preceding my acceptance of Christian Science my wife and I lived in the home of a Christian Science practitioner. My attitude toward my host's beliefs, although I respected the rights of others, was very cynical and intolerant. I was always reasonably well myself and could see no science in a person praying over error or sickness in order to remove it. I had abundant opportunity to read and study, but refused to be enlightened about such palpable foolishness. This condition of mind was intensified because of my very great dissatisfaction with the doctrines of the Church to which I had subscribed when a mere boy. This brought me to a state of mind bordering on atheism.
Those who have suffered from stomach and bowel complaints can understand how miserable I was from an attack of this kind for several weeks until, not liking doctors but ready for almost anything which promised relief, I yielded to my wife, and a Christian Scientist was called. From the first I was surprised by the logical conclusion which seemed to be the basis of the doctrine and I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" to find out for myself what seemed to be working so great a change in me. On the occasion of the healer's second call we attended a midweek service at the Mother Church and I so far forgot my miserable condition as to run some distance through snow and water to catch the car and hold it for the ladies. In a few days more I was eating as usual, and at the end of each meal thanking God for a good appetite.
During my illness I had experienced no desire to use tobacco, and in a week or two after being perfectly healed I woke up to the novel surprise that I had completely forgotten my pipe. I have had no desire for tobacco since then.
