Major-General Adna R. Chaffee has been ordered to sail for China at once and take command of the American military forces which are being sent to co-operate with European nations and Japan in restoring order. General Chaffee served through the Civil War, the subsequent Indian wars, and throughout the Spanish war. When he reaches China it is expected that he will have an American army of about six thousand men under his command.

Mr. Lloyd C. Griscom, United States charge d'affaires, on June 23 presented a fresh note to the Ottoman Government, insisting upon an immediate reply to the demand of the United States for a settlement of the indemnity in connection with the losses of Americans at the time of the Armenian massacres. Although vigorously phrased, the note is not an ultimatum.

The Nation convention of the Prohibiton party was held in Chicago last week and nominated for President John G. Woolley of Illinois, and for Vice-president, Henry B. Metcalf of Rhode Island.
