Science and Health

Many people say that our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" is mystic, abstruse, hard to understand, contradictory, conflicting, ambiguous, needlessly perplexing, and involved. We admit that it seemed to be so to us for many months, because we ourselves were so much involved in the mist, fog, and mire of error that we could not understand Truth.

For the encouragement of others we wish to say that one who studies Science and Health and the Bible with the innocent simplicity of a little child, trusing God to make it plain, and is willing to profit first by much which is easy to understand, such, for example, as the first sentence in the preface, "Leaning on the sustaining Infinite, to-day is big with blessings," will find it to be spiritual food, heavenly manna, or as the tree of Life with "leaves for the healing of the nations." Such persons by faithful continuance in spiritual thought and experience, will grow in the understanding and demonstration of our divine Principle, and be able to test Science and Health, proving all things by Principle, and holding fast that which is good.

All truth is in Mind, in which "we live, and move, and have our being." Truth is free to all and belongs to all by virtue of the eternal law of absolute right. One who thoroughly understands the principle of music can become master of the piano, and one who thoroughly understands the principle of mathematics becomes master of its text-books and problems. This mastery is attained by a process of growth through faithful and diligent perseverance. The study of Science and Health and the understanding of divine Principle are infinitely more important than music or mathematics, and less difficult when undertaken in the right way and with the childlike and teachable spirit "God is His own interpreter, and He will make it plain" just as fast as we are ready for the solution of the different problems which, step by step, lead up to the perfect understanding and demonstration of the healing power of Truth and Love, as demonstrated by our blessed Lord and Master, Jesus the Christ.
